‘Terminator Salvation’ Teaser. Clip of the Day
See the teaser now, before seeing it before THE DARK KNIGHT, even if you should be seeing it after or after after.

Remember when trailers would name-appropriately trail the movie? Me neither. I don’t think anyone does. But occasionally trailers are still shown after the main feature. Back to the Future Part III was advertised at the end of Part II, and The Matrix Reloaded ended with a preview of The Matrix Revolutions. As next installments of cliff-hanging series, though, these sequels were like the old serials from which trailers received their name (in one of multiple explanations).

I suggest that previews of big movies starring the main actor of the film you’re currently seeing also follow this model. Why? Because after watching this teaser (boy does it tease right) trailer for next summer’s Terminator Salvation, which is showing with The Dark Knight and which stars TDK’s Christian Bale, I’m too distracted by my excitement for the nex season to fully concentrate on the blockbuster at hand. Wouldn’t it be better if Warner Bros. instead slipped this trailer in right before the Dark Knight credits with an announcement like, “you’ve just seen Christian Bale in The Dark Knight; see him again next summer in … ”

A roundup of favorite comments about the trailer itself (as opposed to its placement) after the jump:

Erik Henriksen at the Portland Mercury’s Blogtown: “For fuck’s sake, considering it’s a PG-13 Terminator directed by McG, it doesn’t look nearly as terrible as it should.”

Jared Pacheco at JoBlo/Arrow in the Head: “Dare I say McG’s TERMINATOR SALVATION might actually be worth watching? That’s the first thing that crossed my mind.”

Vic Holtreman at Screen Rant: “My first thought? It’s not awful.”

Devin Faraci at CHUD: “I’m surprised that the teaser is so short on imagery - they have a lot of great physical action scenes in the can that could be shown. Still, this is an appetite whetter indeed, and I’m excited to see what goodies they bring to Comic Con next week.”

Josh Tyler at Cinema Blend: “What little there is to see however, looks alright. It’s also worth noting that the movie’s awkward, unweidly subtitole ‘The Future Begins’ is nowhere to be found in the trailer. Maybe that means they’ve dropped it. We can only hope. “

Felon Fest: Television on DVD
Kid and Hef, two old-timer felons, shame CSI with their collection of crime dramas (which includes a “bitchslapping” Perry Mason)

Above: The Alfred Hitchcock Hour: Murder Case starring John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands

Television was always for suckers, but there was a time when we were all suckers, happily. Hef remembers. He was born in 1953, though his wear and tear and rock quarry voice initially made me guess 1945. His roommate and best buddy, Kid, is the same age but looks ten years younger. He remembers when TV was good and true, too. They are both living in the quiet afterlife that follows (if one survives) decades of dope and jail time. Plenty of time to conjure up the good-and-true era via the DVD player. The boys generally go for crime and punishment: Perry Mason, Daniel Boone, Annie Oakley, Superman, The Fugitive. What stands out in my eyes: Even the mediocre shows had a scintillating cinematic quality. The basic dynamism and construction Perry Mason is indistinguishable from its big screen counterparts–the serialized movie adventures of Mr. Moto, Roy Rogers, Charlie Chan and Sherlock Holmes. Those gems we watch on dollar store double feature discs with labels like “Saturday Matinee.” (Holmes and Watson show up in both their black-and-white big screen incarnations and their later color British television guises.)

John Cassavetes appears, like a comet, in his “Brilliant but Cancelled” beatnik detective show Johnny Staccato. And there he is again, as a desperate fugitive in an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents. His gaze and the edge in his whispered threats to the young woman he’s holding hostage are XXX-rated. Indeed, this guy was too brilliant, too keen to realities that 50’s television could only sample in small doses, to be anything but cancelled. Another genius, Robert Altman, turns up as director of a heartstopping, hilarious Hitchcock episode in which we bite our nails over whether Joseph Cotten will escape the office he’s accidentally locked himself in– the same office where’s he’s just killed a woman. It’s Shadow of a Doubt crashing into Psycho.

On various shows, we call out the character actors who pop up as if spotting relatives at a reunion. “That’s my man from those John Wayne flicks!” “Ain’t that Peter Lorre? He got fat.” Indelible mugs from Anthony Mann noirs turn up in their TV counterparts, and vice versa. Raymond Burr materializes in Raw Deal as a babyfaced, bitchslapping mob kingpin. “Perry Mason’s an asshole in this one!” Hef cries.

Whether cheese or caviar, there was something handmade and approachable about crime shows in the 1950’s and ’60s. I wonder if Hef and Kid, my Baby Boom elders, sense it, too. Hard to tell, since they go for the new shows with just as much enthusiasm. Whole seasons of CSI, Boston Legal, Law and Order, Criminal Minds pass through the player. I hate that stuff. If the old shows display the hardboiled influence of the great pulp novels and noir filmmakers, the new shows seem to have retained only the cynicism and smug sense of duty, adding the aesthetic sensibility of an Excedrin commercial. These shows are crude and ghoulish, in love with the autopsy and forensic technology, the genius of the system.

The worst of these shows is Alias, a Homeland Security-era C.I.A. recruitment special that aired on ABC from 2001 to 2006. The show throws various films into its visual blender, starting with Run Lola Run and La Femme Nikita but, as it progresses, leans more toward John “Buttman” Stagliano’s porn epic Fashionistas. Stone cold C.I.A. killers dress up as Vegas whores, school girls, leather freaks, whatever titillating wig/pumps/gun combo the producers come up with each week. Our heroes seduce, kill, maim, torture and terrorize heaps of random people in the course of an average Alias episode, but, as the main character played by Jennifer Garner assures her newborn baby in one episode, she does it all to ensure the kid’s future in a world where there are “a lot of very bad people out there who want to hurt us.”

The boys love the show for its tits and ass and Mission Impossible intrigues. I hate it because it epitomizes the worst of what television, movies and pop culture have become, a dispiriting, sentimental and murderous lie.

Dr. Horrible: The Sequel Gossip Has Already Begun
Plus: When did Joss Whedon and Michael Mann become the same person?

Having missed the launch whilst on vacation, I finally sat down last night and watched all three episodes of Joss Whedon’s musical web miniseries Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog back-to-back-to-back. I had two major notes:

1. When did Joss Whedon and Michael Mann become the same guy? Dr. Horrible is a lone wolf anti-hero whose single-minded devotion to his professional obligation to save a small corner of the world (in this case, by way of organized evil) makes the very concept of romance inconvenient. Sound familiar?

“Why did she talk to me now?” Billy/Dr. Horrible laments, after prospective love interest Penny makes contact right as he’s about to jump start an evil mission. This segues directly into a song with the refrain, “A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.” What Whedon does is the self-mocking, defeatist, loveable loser version of what Mann does, in terms of love as a blight on the record of men who should be above it.

This leads me to my second though, regarding Dr. Horrible’s controversial ending:

2. Is the end really the end?

“Barring some kind of goofy, character-defying twist like making Penny turn out to be Bad Horse, Dr. Horrible was going to end one of two ways: Dr. Horrible gets the girl, or Dr. Horrible becomes the supervillain of his dreams,” Alan Sepinwall wrote. “Joss Whedon chose the latter, and chose to have it play out in the worst way possible for poor Billy.” But by closing on the suggestion that professional success is equivalent to feeling nothing, Whedon, again, is being very Mannian. Diminish entanglements, keep yourself to yourself, wear your sunglasses at night, etc. When a Mann film ends on that note, we are to understand that this is just the way men are supposed to move about the planet. But that final note of Dr. Horrible has a characteristic Whedon angst to it, cleverly engineered to make his superfans insist that this is not the natural end of the story.

And it probably isn’t. Sepinwall talked to Neil Patrick Harris at the TCA’s, and the Dr. Horrible star said Whedon definitely plans to extend the franchise. “Joss has some strange giant master plan that includes much more than a sequel…I think we’re all giggling like little schoolgirls for a week or so and then he’ll figure out what he wants to do next.” More from Sepinwall here; also, on the Dr. Horrible site, Whedon promises he’ll have more details at Comic-Con, so we’ll pass those along from San Diego as soon as we can.

Shane West may not have been the first person that jumps to mind when thinking of candidates to portray deceased punk rocker Darby Crash of The Germs, but he certainly surprised us (and the crowd) when he joined the reunited rockers on-stage last year. Now the resulting biopic “What We Do Is Secret” has its first trailer, and we’re thrilled to present it exclusively on MTV.com.
Superman 2: The Fan Cut
Richard Lester’s version and Richard Donner’s version become one on YouTube.

My favorite part of Superman 2: The Fan Cut––YouTube user ABDirector’s mash-up of the originally released version of the film directed by Richard Lester with original Superman director Richard Donner’s version that came out on DVD a couple of year ago––is the comment threads. People take Superman II very seriously. They also take recuts very seriously, and everyone has their own idea of how they’d do it differently. Example, from Part 6:

barryfreiman

You’re 34 and a half minutes into the movie before you even see Superman in action (other than the brief reprise of Superman 1 at the beginning) - I think you should find a way to incorporate the Eiffel Tower scene

ABdirector

That scene has no place in my cut. Yeah, I know it lacks Superman in action, but so did the Donner Cut. But in the end, Superman is seen in alot of action.

johntheroid

Why? That scene sucks! Dont’t listen to him! Keep doing your thing man it rocks!

ABDirector is no doubt used to this kind of back-and-forth by now, as he’s sort of become the go-to guy for YouTube re-edits of fanboy classics, including this speeding up of the lightsaber duel between Darth Vader and Obi Wan Knobi from A New Hope. He explains why this is necessary:

The classic duel between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi was a highlight of the original trilogy. But now with the prequels out and them having faster and more intense lightsaber duels (especially the Mustafar duel), this one seems a bit slow and dull and does not look like these were the two Jedi (Even though they are older and weaker) who once dueled furiously on Mustafar. Since Lucas decided to add silly things like Han shot first and Hayden as Spirit/Anakin in the Special Editions, maybe he should have altered this lightsaber duel to make it look faster and more intense? Well, this is what I have done.

I think this kind of brings ABDirector’s whole project into focus: it’s a kind of rebellion against this idea that filmmakers have the right to take something that people have loved for years and constantly tinkering with it, allegedly in order to create “definitive” versions, but maybe really just to sell more DVDs.

Yesterday, while pretending to listen to music on my headphones, I overheard a voice from my past.

The voice was that of Billy Corgan, lead singer of the disbanded/re-banded/whatever Smashing Pumpkins, and the song was “The Beginning Is the End Is the Beginning.” You might know its more fist-pumping incarnation “The End Is the Beginning Is the End,” but for the three other people who purchased the soundtrack for the 1997 Joel Schumacher tour-de-force “Batman & Robin,” the slow-as-molasses version of the band’s Grammy-winning hit rang equally as familiar.

I lifted my head only to notice that the song was coming from one of our many monitors, amid flashing violent, fancy and violently fancy animation. I was perplexed — where was Poison Ivy? California’s governor? Batman’s nipples? Then, I went about my day.

A few people in this morning’s news meeting started talking up how a Smashing Pumpkins song was used in the trailer for “Watchmen” — suddenly, I put two and two together, and opened my mouth. And nobody believed me. Yes, everybody: I accept your apologies for not believing me when I spoke about the song’s origin. But that’s not what I’m here to talk about.

What compelled Zack Snyder, the, um … watchman … behind “Watchmen” to use the track? Was it because there’s that shot in the trailer of a guy (I’m sure he has a name, but seriously, people, the last graphic novel I read involved the name “Jughead”) falling from the sky that vaguely resembles something Batman might do? Is “Watchmen” sort of like watching “Batman & Robin” in slow-motion — much like how listening to “The Beginning Is the End Is the Beginning” is somewhat of a stretched-out version of the original tune? Here’s what Snyder had to say:

“Smashing Pumpkins we picked for a couple reasons. For one, I felt like in mood, it was correct for what we were trying to do. We were trying to sort of get at the unwashed masses who don’t know anything about ‘Watchmen’ and find something provocative that makes you go, ‘What is that?’ … And then, also, I felt like the song itself spoke a little to the ‘Watchmen’ world. And then on the third hand … it will create controversy a little bit in the fanbase because they’re going to be like, ‘Wait, is that going to be in the movie? That ain’t 1985!’ ”

All good reasons, we suppose. But it doesn’t answer the bigger question: Did he have any idea that Corgan wrote the song expressly for that other nocturnal superhero?

Source: feeds.feedburner.com

EXCLUSIVE: David Goyer Says He Knows The Theme For ‘Batman 3’
Whether you agree or not, judging from both fan reaction and near universal critical acclaim, “The Dark Knight” will almost certainly go down as the greatest comic book movie of all-time, with a performance from Heath Ledger that is being hailed as one of the greatest on-screen villains ever. Now all Christopher Nolan, his brother […]

Whether you agree or not, judging from both fan reaction and near universal critical acclaim, “The Dark Knight” will almost certainly go down as the greatest comic book movie of all-time, with a performance from Heath Ledger that is being hailed as one of the greatest on-screen villains ever.

Now all Christopher Nolan, his brother Jonathan, David Goyer, and an as yet unnamed villain have to do is top it.

“I think that’s the scariest thing – to think, could we come up with a third movie that was as good as the first two? Can we top ourselves?” screenwriter David Goyer asked aloud, almost rhetorically, in a recent conversation with MTV News. “Doing it a third time would be a big proposition.”

Make no mistake about it, though, a third film HAS been discussed, Goyer confessed, revealing that, while nothing is concrete, both a villain and a theme have been bandied about.

“We’ve only talked loosely about it, though, Chris and I,” Goyer said.

Interestingly, it’s the theme, and not the villain, that most interests me, especially given how the latter seems inexorably tied to the former in this new modern Batman universe. (Fear the predominant issue in “Begins” precipitating the introduction of Scarecrow, escalation in “Knight” similarly calling for The Joker.

The fact that Goyer has a theme he wants to keep in mind for a possible “Batman 3” means he also has a direction, a crisis, and, yes, a villain.

So what is it?

“I have one,” Goyer said laughing. “But I’m not going to tell you. Chris is very particular about that.

“I do think, though, that if there’s not a third film – these two movies stand on their own,” he added. “I think it could go either way.”

Not us. We want a “Batman 3.” So we’ll throw it out to you: Now that you’ve seen “The Dark Knight,” now that you know how it ends, what could be the theme of “Batman 3”? Who could be the villain to fit that theme? Sound off below.

I’m still wrapping my head around Day-Lewis starring in a musical for Rob Marshall. I’m not a huge fan of “Chicago” and well, let’s just say he’s no P.T. Anderson (unfair I know, who is?). Then the long list of Day-Lewis’ leading ladies began to emerge. For the uninitiated, “Nine” is a musical re-working of Fellini’s legendary film, “8 1/2,” and delves into the many loves of director Guido Contini.

Among the impressive cast Marshall has assembled to play against Day-Lewis are Nicole Kidman, Sophia Loren and Dame Judi Dench herself. There’s a whole bunch of Oscar nominations in the list I just mentioned. And now newly added to the cast is…Fergie?!? She’ll be playing Saraghina who “introduces Guido to the world of sexuality.” Does this mean that it’s a young actor playing opposite Fergie and not the two-time Oscar winner? Don’t tell me Mr. “I drink your milkshake!” won’t get to play at least one scene opposite Ms. “My London, London bridge wanna go down”?!? Rob Marshall, don’t let an opportunity like this go by the wayside!

Do you think Fergie can hold her own against Daniel Day-Lewis? What sort of films do you want to see her do in the future?

But what does the poor drummer get? Pretty soon, the greatest one of all is going to get his very own biopic.

Mike Myers’ long-in-development film on legendary Who drummer Keith Moon is finally nearing the starting gate, the comic told MTV News, excited to step into the shoes of the man he called the best drummer of all time.

“Keith Moon redefined drumming. I mean, there was drumming before him, and then drumming after him,” Myers said of Moon. “His life is just so colorful and fascinating.”

And remarkably, unmistakably depressing, Myers added, calling the script “so sad.”

Moon, the man, of course, died from a drug overdose in 1978 at the relatively young age of 32. But Moon the myth lives on. So what, if anything, is there to learn from his life?

“His name is Moon. And a moon is a non-self-luminous object. It requires sunlight of others in order to be seen. If there’s no sun, the moon is invisible,” Myers said, sounding a little like his new-age Guru Pitka. “And the script so far is about how important it is to be your own star and not be a moon, ironically.

“It becomes a cautionary tale of drugs. They are not the answer and in this movie you see how not the answer they are,” Myers added. “It’s very moving.”

The movie, tentatively titled ‘See Me Feel Me: Keith Moon Naked for Your Pleasure’ is being produced by Who bandmate Roger Daltrey.

What do you think? Is Mike Myers the man to bring Keith Moon back to life? While we’re at it, do we really need another musical biopic anyway? Sound off on your thoughts below.

Finally we have a title for the new Indiana Jones movie which will arrive May 22, 2008.

Apparently the title was announced by Shia LaBeouf at the MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas on Sunday. I guess either Harrison Ford has passed the torch to a newer generation or he is too old to get into the VMS’s to announce the title himself.

Unfortunately Sean Connery will not be in this one. The timing is great because if this movie were held off any longer then Ford would have been as old as Connery was in the first one.

I’m not sure I like the name but with big names like George Lucas (co-executive producer) and Steven Spielberg (director) I think it will be great. Of course, those who believe Lucas totally botched the newer Star Wars movies might disagree.
